About Chikungunya

What Is Chikungunya?

This viral infection occurs in some tropical and subtropical regions of the world, predominantly transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito.

How Do You Catch Chikungunya?

CHIKV is transmitted predominantly through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito. These mosquitoes are active throughout the day, especially during the hours of highest activity: mid-morning and late afternoon to twilight.

Affected Regions

Outbreaks have occurred in countries in Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean, Indian and Pacific Oceans.

There is a risk the virus will be spread to unaffected areas by infected travellers.

How Is Chikungunya Treated?

CHIKV infection is suspected when typical clinical symptoms occur in a person who has visited or resided in a known risk area, particularly when an outbreak is on-going.

The diagnosis can be confirmed by detecting the presence of the virus or antibodies to the virus in the patient’s blood.

No specific antiviral treatment is currently recommended, and patients are treated with rest, hydration and medications for pain and fever.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be helpful in alleviating symptoms.
